Hunting in the Gunnison Valley
The Gunnison Valley has something to offer for all hunting enthusiasts. If you’re looking for big game animals such as elk and deer; you’ve come to the right place. Whether you prefer archery, muzzleloader or rifle hunting, there is always a season for you!
Mule Deer
The area is renowned for big bucks and people travel from around the world to stalk mule deer. The Colorado Division of Wildlife limits the number of licenses for mule deer, therefore a large number of bucks grow to full maturity and have trophy-quality racks.
Elk
Colorado is the only state where elk licenses are available over-the-counter right up to the day of hunting season. Elk hunters flock to the area to take advantage of the high success rate.
Challenges of Hunting in the Gunnison Valley
Hunters should remember that big game hunting in the high country is challenging. The high altitude and rugged terrain requires those visiting the area to be in good physical condition. The animals often move to more remote and rugged areas when they start to feel the pressure applied by hunters- so be prepared to travel long distances over varied terrain.
