Now, eight years later and over 770 care packages sent to U.S. combat troops overseas, they are motivated to continue supplying goods to people connected to this community.

With a drop off bin set up at the Gunnison Library, local business and individual contributions, and personal drive, they provide on average one care package a week. They aim to send a little piece of home to remind troops from local Gunnison Valley families that this community is appreciative and proud of their work.

NHN’s mission is to respond charitably to situations that require quick action to ensure the health and safety of an individual or family in dire need of help in order to restore stability to a crisis situation. NHN serves Crestone and the Baca. Moffat is helped when county grant money is available.Lynda was president, Joany was secretary for 8 years then vice president. Lynda has recently rejoined NHN as a board member and Joany has rejoined on the fundraising committee. Lynda and Joany both exemplified the heart felt community giving spirit that is NHN. Both volunteered countless hours spent handling requests and the ongoing fundraising efforts that were necessary to help those in crisis situations. Some of the types of fundraising included auctions, live and silent, garden tours, dances, community dinners, talent shows and the popular “2005 Calendar Guys” calendar. From a former NHN board member “Lynda and Joany’s dedication was amazing. They were always willing to put in the extra time to help someone. Lynda examplified giving at its best when it came to the requests, talking to the folks, contacting the utilities to arrange a better payment or to not turn off the utility. Joany was a guiding voice for the principles of the organization. At the fundraisers, Lynda and Joany were the first to arrive and the last to leave.

Their devotion to helping others was beautiful to behold and a valuable lesson for myself and others.” Neighbors Helping Neighbors was formed on June 30, 1998 as a registered corporation within the state of Colorado. NHN is set up to facilitate raising funds within the community to help in crisis situations. All money raised goes to pay the bills of a neighbor in need. There are no administrative costs and confidentiality is kept unless permission is granted for publicity for fundraising purposes.

Aide may consist of financial help with a direct payment of a bill or a service. Money is paid to the provider not to the person making the request. Typical requests include help with rent, utilities, medical expenses, firewood, etc. NHN maintains the intention of helping in a crisis situation and does not provide maintenance assistance.

Literally hundreds of individuals and families have been helped by NHN. Awareness that a helping hand in a time of crisis can help someone get back on their feet and stay there, instead of sliding further down in need. Lynda, Joany and NHN have been written up extensively in the Crestone Eagle:
www.crestoneeagle.com
The Greater Crestone Community Cookbook, with recipes from wild game to vegetarian, is now available for only $15. Donations or cookbook orders maybe made to NHN, POB 822, Crestone, CO 81131.

Everyone with a septic system is the owner of an individual sewage treatment plant. This carries with it a big responsibility to assure the safety of the water we drink and the environment our children play in. Septic systems will adequately absorb and purify wastewater if they are properly maintained. A few precautions can save you a big headache and a lot of hard earned money. Leonard Brown of Brown’s Septic Service recommends reducing water use, avoiding grease, pumping the tank periodically, and properly landscaping the yard to keep surface water away from the tank and leach field. These are inexpensive precautions that can help assure your system a long life.

What will happen if I wait too long to pump the tank? If the solids that accumulate in the septic tank are not regularly removed these solids will eventually overflow and accumulate in the leach field and clog the pores in the soil. This blockage severely damages the leach field and causes sewage to back up into the house or flow across the ground surface over the leach field. If this happens you may need to construct a new leach field on a different part of your lot. Pumping the septic tank after the soil in the leach field has become completely clogged will not rejuvenate the system. It will only provide a few days reprieve until the tank fills
up again.

How do you know when you should have your septic system pumped? The frequency with which you will need to pump depends on three variables: the size of your tank, the volume of your wastewater, and the solids content of your wastewater. The size of your family plays an important factor in determining how often maintenance should be done. “Normally for a family of four, every two years is the standard. This averages to twenty dollars or less per month,”
says Leonard.

Brown’s Septic Service offers affordable solutions to the San Luis Valley’s septic needs. Their expert technicians are nationally certified and customers rave about their professional and friendly customer service.
